If you’re graduating this semester, and you’re like me, you’re starting to panic about leaving behind everything Gainesville has to offer. Coming back from Spring Break made that impending diploma seem way too real, and now you may be looking to pack in everything you’ve wanted to do over the last four years into the last six weeks. Lucky for you, I’m here to round up all of the must-do activities you need to check off your bucket list before the end of April.
Devil’s Den Spring — Located in Williston, Florida, Devil’s Den Spring is one of the hidden gems of this area and a quick trip from Gainesville. Rental equipment is available for scuba diving and snorkeling for those looking to do more than just swim around. The water is 72 degrees year-round, and the views of the spring are stunning, so it’s definitely worth the trip.
Bob’s River Place — Bob’s River Place, located along the Suwannee River, is basically a water park set up in a guy’s backyard. That isn’t a great way to sell it, but it is super fun and pretty cheap at just $25 per car. There’s tons of water slides, rope swings, floating docks and kid’s water games, so no matter what kind of activity you’re looking for, Bob’s has it. It’s about an hour drive from Gainesville and something you definitely want to experience before you leave town.
Paynes Prairie — Paynes Prairie is absolutely something everyone needs to experience while living in Gainesville. It’s great for a day out biking or just going for a nice walk. Where else can you see alligators, wild pigs and horses so up close and personal?
The Top — This downtown restaurant is, in my mind, the most classic Gainesville spot and one that cannot be missed. It has great food, great drinks and a great atmosphere that is all local and offers options for any kind of eater. It’s location on North Main Street also allows you to stroll and explore downtown.
Swamp Head Brewery — Swamp Head Brewery’s slogan is “Inherently Floridian,” and after spending an afternoon at the brewery, you will definitely agree. It is located off of 34th Street and is situated on a swamp and surrounded by trees. Swamp Head offers great beers and frequently hosts events with food and themed drinks. You can sit outside at the tables or right on the grass, and it is a great place to relax and grab a great drink.
Lake Wauburg — Owned by UF, Lake Wauburg is free to students and an absolute must for anyone about to graduate. There are tons of activities, whether you’re looking to kayak, paddleboard, wakeboard/water ski, swim or tan. They also have barbecues if you’re looking to get your grill on. If somehow you haven’t gone yet, take advantage of one of these beautiful weekends, and go check it out.
