Student Government SG Generic
Student Government SG Generic

Steven Orban was dressed in a suit and tie waiting for his first Student Government interview Tuesday afternoon.

“I want to have an impact on the school around me,” the 22-year-old UF economics graduate student said.

Orban, who hopes to run with the Inspire Party for the graduate senator seat, is one of 291 students who registered to run in the Spring 2019 UF SG elections, Henry Fair, the supervisor of elections and 21-year-old UF political science junior, wrote in an email.

After three days, 86 students interviewed with Inspire Party, 204 with Impact and one student will run as an independent, Fair said.

Impact and Inspire have concluded interviews for students who want to run with the parties during the Spring elections. The parties held the interviews from Sunday to Tuesday. Seven parties registered to run candidates but only two interviewed, Fair said.

This semester’s SG elections will be held on Feb. 19 and 20 to fill 50 Student Senate seats by college and year and the executive ticket, which is made up of the Student Body president, vice president and treasurer.

Last semester, 239 students interviewed: 72 with Inspire and 167 with Impact. In Spring 2018, a total of 302 students interviewed: 136 with Inspire, 129 with Impact, 27 with the Challenge Party, eight as undecided and two as Independent. Challenge Party, which was formed and only ran for one semester, did not interview for Senate candidates this year.

Candidates should campaign fairly and refer to election codes if they question something, Fair said.

“And, of course, have fun,” he said.
