Woman said she shot ex-boyfriend out of self defense, police say

Gainesville Police are investigating the death of a man they believe was killed out of self-defense.

Just after midnight Wednesday, police received a 911 call from a woman who said she shot her 42-year-old ex-boyfriend Daniel Cain Smith, according to a press release. The woman’s name has not been released.

Upon arriving at the scene of the 6400 block of Southwest 20th Avenue, police found Smith unconscious on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds, the release said.

Police wrote the woman had multiple injuries that lined up with her being attacked. Authorities are reviewing evidence and interviewing people who have knowledge about their relationship.
