Education updates generic

Nationwide, COVID-19 cases are at the highest levels since August. The trend follows suit in Florida — but schools have not seen the level of outbreaks expected from reopening.

Cases in Alachua County Public Schools increased by 18 students and four staff members this week as of Friday afternoon, according to the ACPS COVID-19 dashboard. Schools in some Florida districts have shut down, but ACPS has not had any closures.

There are 178 people quarantining after exposure to COVID-19, according to the dashboard.

The total number of elementary student and staff cases sits at 35, according to the dashboard. For middle and high schools, that number is 74. Last week, the district reported 31 and 65 cases respectively.

Student cases were in Foster, Glen Springs, Metcalfe, Newberry, Rawlings and Wiles Elementary Schools. Staff members tested positive at Hidden Oak, Meadowbrook and Norton Elementary Schools.

Four student cases are shown at Howard Bishop Middle School. A staff case was reported at Mebane Middle School.

High school cases have decreased in the last week, dropping from 22 to 11 student cases, with one at Buchholz, five at Gainesville and five at Santa Fe High Schools. COVID-19 continues to impact school sports as well, forcing Fletcher, a Jacksonville area high school, to cancel a Friday night football game against Buchholz. Gainesville High also had cancelled games earlier this month.

There weren’t any reported COVID-19 cases in any ACPS school centers until this week, when a student tested positive at Sidney Lanier Center. A school center caters to exceptional students with disabilities or behavioral or social issues.

In district administration offices, there are five staff cases.
