Florida spring soccer schedule released

The Gators will look to put a disappointing fall season behind them to secure a spot in College Cup

The Florida soccer team released its spring schedule in a tweet Friday.

The team will play eight games after a less than stellar fall season. They finished 1-6-1 before bowing out of the SEC tournament’s second round to Missouri.

The Gators will start the season with a four-game homestand, opening against FAU Feb.18. Matches will follow against instate foes USF and two-time NCAA champion FSU Feb. 27 and  March 6. The Bulls previously knocked UF out of the 2019 NCAA Tournament with a commanding 4-2 win.

Their final home game will be March 11 against Georgia Southern.

After the long stretch of matches in Gainesville, the team will hit the road. They kickoff with a match against LSU March 14 in Orange Beach, Alabama, before heading back to the Sunshine State to play UNF in Jacksonville March 24.

The team will then travel north to Atlanta to play Georgia March 28 before closing against Miami in Coral Gables April 3.

After the regular season ends, the Women’s College Cup is set to take place from May 13-17, culminating in Cary, North Carolina, where the final will be hosted at Wakemed Soccer Park, home of the NC Courage.

The format of the cup has been changed to deal with COVID-19-related challenges. The bracket has been cut from the usual 64 teams to 48. Thirty-one of these teams will be automatic qualifiers if they won their respective conferences. The remaining 17 spots are at-large bids or teams selected by the committee.

The selection for the tournament will be April 18 —  a day after the regular season ends.

While there is a slim chance that the Gators will secure one of those at-large bids, they have one great opportunity to do so. Florida State finished the fall season ranked No.1, so if the Gators manage to beat them, they might have a shot.
