UF, Santa Fe, Alachua County Public Schools cancel classes Thursday due to Tropical Storm Nicole

Classes will not be held Thursday

UF, Santa Fe College and Alachua County Public Schools announced the closure of their Thursday campus’ operations.

UF announced the university’s closure at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, in anticipation of Tropical Storm Nicole’s landfall as the reason for its Nov. 10 temporary closing.

Tropical Storm Nicole is expected to become a hurricane in the near future.

According to the announcement, the closure was decided out of an abundance of caution. UF expects to resume holiday campus operations on Friday in observance of Veterans Day, according to the alert.

ACPS announced its Thursday closure through a Twitter post at 4:33 p.m. Tuesday, stating the decision was made due to the potential for high winds, power outages and other effects of Tropical Storm Nicole.

Santa Fe also released an announcement Tuesday through an online alert. The college has similarly made the decision to close its campus in advance of Tropical Storm Nicole, according to the alert.

Santa Fe and ACPS reminded students and faculty this event will not affect their campus closures Friday; they will remain closed as previously planned.

As of Tuesday evening, Alachua County is under a tropical storm watch, which includes several other regions throughout Northeastern Florida. The county is expected to experience tropical storm force winds beginning Wednesday afternoon through Thursday.
