UF President Ben Sasse announced Scott Angle as provost in an email to faculty and community members Tuesday morning.
Angle has served as interim provost since June 2023, after Joe Glover announced in January he would be stepping down from the position after 15 years.
Sasse announced in March a search committee would be looking for Glover’s replacement. Angle was one of 14 UF faculty members to serve on the committee, which also brought in outside consultation from the Isaacson, Miller research firm.
The search committee recruited extraordinary finalists but decided not to make offers to any of them, instead nominating Angle to the role because of his excellent work as interim provost, Sasse said in the email.
“Many of the folks on our excellent search committee recommended that we take the ‘interim’ out of his title,” Sasse said. “Effective immediately, we’re doing just that.”
Angle was named UF senior vice president for agriculture and natural resources in 2020 and has since led IFAS in research on implementing AI in agriculture practices to address global food insecurity and environmental protection. Robert Gilbert, the IFAS Dean for Research, will continue to lead the university in those roles.
Prior to UF, Angle worked at the University of Maryland as associate dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the University of Georgia as dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
In 2018, Angle was appointed by former President Donald Trump as director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
Over the last five months, Angle has focused on serving the university rather than just focusing on the operations of bureaucratic processes, Sasse wrote in the email.
Angle hopes to continue breaking down “bureaucratic silos” and focus on UF’s 10x10x10 objective — reaching ten top-ten programs in the next ten years — during his time as provost, Sasse said.
“We’ve got a lot of work ahead, and Scott has rolled up his sleeves,” Sasse said.
