Sixty minutes was not enough to decide who would advance to the Elite Eight of the 2025 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament. Florida and Stanford headed into overtime after a back-and-forth regulation.
With the score at 12-apiece, both sides looked to score the game winning goal.
Then, it happened. UF redshirt freshman attacker Frannie Hahn found junior midfielder Kaitlyn Davies, who slotted home her shot to give the Gators the overtime victory.
Davies’ goal earned No. 4 Florida (19-2) a 13-12 overtime win against No. 10 Stanford on Sunday afternoon at Donald R. Dizney Stadium in Gainesville. It marked the second consecutive year UF advanced to at least the Elite Eight.
The All-American junior midfielder led the way for the Gators, scoring five goals in the matchup. Behind her, graduate student attacker Jordan Basso tallied four goals for UF.
Meanwhile, Stanford sophomore attacker Ava Arceri and redshirt sophomore attacker Aliya Polinsky both added three goals apiece.
In net for the Gators, redshirt junior Elyse Finnelle earned the victory, making seven saves while allowing nine goals. Cardinal junior goalkeeper Lucy Pearson denied six shots but allowed 13 goals.
Florida came out strong to open the match, leading by as much as three midway through the second quarter as Basso scored an early hat trick. However, Stanford responded and took the lead late in the third quarter, 9-8.
Falling behind, UF took momentum to open the fourth quarter, scoring four early goals, three of which came from Davies. The three goal lead was unsustainable, however, as Stanford stormed back to send the game to overtime.
There, Davies was the hero, scoring the winner.
The Gators will advance to the Elite Eight to faceoff against No. 20 Duke on Thursday. No time has been announced yet.
