Fans of early 2000s pop gathered Wednesday night at Heartwood Soundstage as sister duo Aly & AJ brought their tour to Gainesville, drawing an audience fueled by nostalgia and longtime fandom.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, string lights lining the outdoor stage flickered on, illuminating the venue just as Aly & AJ walked out to begin their set at 8 p.m. In coordinated floral-patterned tops, the duo sang hits like “Potential Breakup Song” and deep cuts like “Silver Deliverer” and “Dandelions.”
In the crowd, purple wristbands, indicating attendees aged 21 and older, far outnumbered the red wristbands given to those under 21. Ahead of the show, fans browsed a merchandise table selling vinyl records, T-shirts and hoodies while others gathered near the bar.
For many in the audience, the concert marked a return to childhood memories.
Rowan McKown, 27, who works as a cinema coordinator at the Hippodrome Theatre, said attending the show felt like revisiting her first-ever concert experience: Aly & AJ in 2006.
Nearly two decades later, she said the opportunity to see the duo again brought back memories from that first concert.
“I get to return to that and experience ‘Potential Breakup Song,’ ‘Rush’ and ‘Woah’ — that’s really cool,” she said.
McKown said the band’s songs still regularly appear in playlists among her friends.
The duo consists of sisters Alyson “Aly” Michalka and Amanda Joy “AJ” Michalka, who perform professionally as Aly & AJ.
The pair first gained prominence in the mid-2000s with the release of their debut album “Into the Rush" in 2005, which included the hit single “Rush.”
Their popularity expanded with the 2007 song “Potential Breakup Song,” which peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Beyond music, both sisters have built acting careers. Aly Michalka has appeared in film and television roles including “Easy A” and “iZombie,” while AJ Michalka starred in the Disney Channel series “Phil of the Future” and was recently cast in the next season of the popular HBO drama “The White Lotus.”
Another attendee, Caeli Wilkerson, 25, a Gainesville native and screenwriter, said she had been a fan since childhood.
Wilkerson said she bought the duo’s debut CD when it was released in 2005 and even decorated her bedroom with Aly & AJ merchandise.
“I was the biggest Aly & AJ fan ever when I was a kid,” she said.
She discovered the Gainesville show through an Instagram advertisement and immediately bought tickets. For Wilkerson, seeing the band perform live added a new dimension to songs she has known for years.
“It makes you realize this is a real person who made this song,” she said.
In recent years, Aly & AJ have continued releasing music and touring, blending the pop style that launched their careers with a more mature indie-pop sound.
Behind the scenes, touring staff helped support the show. Conor Amssden, 30, serves as the band’s merchandise manager, overseeing merchandise setup and sales at each stop on the tour.
Amssden has worked with Aly & AJ since 2023 after contacting the duo’s merchandise company. After about 15 years working in tour merchandising for artists such as Charli XCX and Role Model, he said the band stands out for how they treat their team.
“They’re the nicest people on the planet,” he said. “They’re so nice to their crew and to their fans.”
