After a magical Sunday in which everything went right for the Gators, Florida seniors Kyra Taylor and Jayden Emmanuel earned Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors.
Taylor was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week after recording a brace in each of Florida’s two victories, while Emmanuel earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Taylor’s brilliance began in the 16th minute against Coastal Carolina on Aug. 20. She recorded Florida’s first three shots and scored twice in eleven minutes to help the Gators secure a 3-2 victory.
The Longview, Texas, native was among the group of players who transferred from Mississippi State. After the match, Florida head coach Nick Zimmerman said he was not surprised by the striker’s performance.
“Kyra does everything right,” Zimmerman said. “Not only is she a talented footballer, but she’s also an incredible human being. She’s so selfless. Were we surprised she had the game she did? No.”
That was only the beginning of a memorable week for Taylor. Three days later, reigning national champion Florida State arrived in Gainesville riding an eight-match winning streak against the Gators.
History was about to unfold in the Sunday matinee.
Florida earned a corner kick in the 22nd minute, and Taylor headed freshman Mia Gray’s picture-perfect cross into the net. Taylor struck again in the second half, converting a cross from fellow Mississippi State transfer Zoe Main to record her second consecutive brace.
Emmanuel summed up the victory clearly after the match.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Emmanuel said
That was true not only for the Florida program but also for the fifth-year goalkeeper. Entering Sunday, Emmanuel had made just one career start for the Gators. With Florida State on the schedule, she faced a heavy workload in only her second.
Emmanuel and Florida’s back line delivered a phenomenal performance, limiting a Seminoles attack that scored nine goals across its first three matches to one late goal after UF had built a commanding 3-0 lead.
She made four saves against Florida State and finished the week with five. Emmanuel also recorded one save while keeping Coastal Carolina scoreless during the second half of Florida’s victory.
Her biggest save came with the Gators holding a narrow 1-0 lead. Florida State attacker Shaniel Buckley found herself one-on-one with Emmanuel, but the goalkeeper dove to her right and kept Buckley off the scoresheet.
The Gators sit at 2-1 with four nonconference matches remaining before beginning their 10-match SEC schedule.
Florida returns to action Thursday against Jacksonville University with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. at Donald R. Dizney Stadium.
