In their first appearance in Waco, Texas, the Gators sealed a sweep over the Bears in a fluctuating-paced matchup.
No. 17 Florida (3-1) swept No. 20 Baylor (4-1) on Saturday in Waco, Texas, in its third-straight road matchup.
Three games into Florida’s regular season, junior setter Taylor Parks led the team in assists (118) and aces (eight). She continued to excel for the team against the Bears on Saturday, recording 32 assists.
Senior outside hitter Kamryn Chaney also remained strong, leading the team in kills (12) and maintaining an impressive team-leading .786 hitting clip.
Entering the first set, Florida gained traction and started strong with a 4-0 run, with three of those points coming from Baylor attack errors. The Gators never let go of that momentum, maintaining a lead over the Bears for the entirety of the first set.
With Baylor’s sluggish start, Florida continued to extend its lead over a team that never found its rhythm.
Although the Gators were rocky with their serves – recording 14 total service errors – they could not be shaken. Florida appeared solid, dominating the first set, 25-13.
However, the remainder of the match was not as fluid for Florida.
The second set saw a warmed up and more controlled Baylor offense. Settling in and switching their rotation, the Bears used Florida’s service errors to their advantage and adjusted their strategies, staying in the set and matching the pace. Although, the Bears were not perfect, tallying 20 attack errors and eight service errors.
The score was tied 15 times in the second set, with both contenders going point-for-point and Florida attempting to keep its composure after a near-effortless first set.
UF’s challenging schedule has been demanding for the team. Coming off a nail-biting five-set loss against No. 5 Wisconsin on Wednesday, the Gators shifted slightly out of sync against Baylor.
Saturday’s contest marked Florida’s first-ever appearance in Waco, Texas, and their third straight match outside The Swamp.
Ultimately, the Gators came through when they needed to. They took advantage of an attack error by the Bears, securing the second set 25-23.
The Gators entered the third set eyeing a sweep and taking the first point with a kill from Chaney and an assist from Parks.
Baylor with something to prove – tried not to let Florida take it so easily. But they could not find their grip, slipping further and further away from victory. With the efforts of junior middle blocker Alec Rothe, she pummelled it away for the kill, closing out the sweep for the Gators.
Florida finished out the contest with a .281 hitting clip, succeeding over Baylor’s .046.
Junior opposite hitter Logan King gave away 18 attack errors, the most for the team on a day they sacrificed too many. However, she remained an asset, thrashing away 10 kills and retaining a .500 hitting percentage.
Looking to strengthen its coordination and shy away from as many errors, the Gators will make a quick trip to Denton, Texas, Sunday. It will face the North Texas Mean Green at 2 p.m. ET.
