Florida soccer entered Thursday night’s match with nothing to lose. Fresh off its second top-five victory of the season, the Gators took the field with confidence.
But any momentum from the victory over No. 5 Alabama quickly faded as No. 2 Vanderbilt (13-0-1) dominated from start to finish in a 3-0 win over Florida (6-5-3). It was the Commodores' first win over the Gators in Nashville since 1995, and they remained undefeated on the campaign.
Vanderbilt’s press created problems immediately. Senior Sydney Watts, the reigning SEC Forward of the Year, nearly opened the scoring seconds into the match.
Watts received a pass outside the box, turned past UF sophomore defender Norah Abbott and fired a shot, forcing UF goalkeeper Jayden Emmanuel to make her first save of the night.
In the eighth minute, freshman forward Mia Hebert, making her fourth collegiate start, fired a shot after a scramble in Florida’s penalty box, forcing Emmanuel to make her second save.
On Vanderbilt’s first corner kick, senior midfielder Courtney Jones delivered a dangerous ball into the box. Emmanuel came off her line but lost her grip, allowing senior defender Margo Matula to slot the ball home.
Florida head coach Nick Zimmerman challenged the play, arguing that Emmanuel had been fouled. The goal was overturned after review, keeping the match scoreless.
In the 25th minute, Jones delivered the Commodores’ second corner kick to junior defender Mary Beth McLaughlin, who sent her shot wide.
Florida needed 26 minutes to record its first shot, a blocked attempt by senior forward Lena Bailey. Vanderbilt’s midfield and defense limited the Gators’ space and prevented them from generating clear scoring opportunities.
In the 33rd minute, Watts found space inside the penalty box on a counterattack and slotted the ball home. But another video review disallowed the goal because of a foul by Vanderbilt freshman midfielder Lena Tusche.
Three minutes later, the Commodores broke through. Jones dribbled into the final third and unleashed a screamer from 25 yards out that sailed past a diving Emmanuel for a 1-0 lead.
Vanderbilt doubled its advantage just 33 seconds later. Watts received a header from Jones and fired home her 14th goal of the season and sixth in SEC play.
Moments later, sophomore midfielder Adia Symmonds recorded Florida’s first shot on goal, forcing Vanderbilt goalkeeper Alexa Gianoplus to make her first save.
Vanderbilt sophomore midfielder Vicky Pugh entered in the 42nd minute and scored with her first touch. Her right-footed shot pushed the lead to 3-0, leaving Florida facing its largest deficit of the season.
The Commodores controlled possession throughout the first half and entered the break with a 10-2 advantage in shots.
Vanderbilt picked up where it left off, threatening to extend its lead just 45 seconds into the second half. Hebert nearly made it 4-0, but Emmanuel dove to her left and pushed the shot away for her fourth save of the match.
Down 3-0, Florida struggled to produce a comeback as Vanderbilt maintained its pressure.
In the 58th minute, Hebert found herself unmarked in the Gators’ penalty box and flicked a header into the net. But for the third time that night, a Commodores goal was disallowed, this time because Hebert was offside when the pass was played.
On Florida’s third corner kick of the night, redshirt sophomore forward Addy Hess fired a shot off the ensuing set piece, but Gianoplus made a routine save.
By the 73rd minute, Vanderbilt held a 14-4 advantage in shots, leaving Florida little hope of a comeback.
With 14 minutes remaining, Florida made a goalkeeper change as Paloma Peña entered for her first appearance since Aug. 20.
Senior forward Montelene Dymond continued to work her way back after missing more than a month with an injury. In the 83rd minute, she received a header from Bailey on the far side of the penalty box, but Gianoplus saved her shot.
Florida’s attack generated no more chances as the Gators suffered their third SEC loss of the season.
The Gators continue their road trip Sunday against Arkansas. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET at Razorback Field.
