Smith

A four-time bicycle thief was accused of stealing two more Sunday.

Chadrick Rodell Smith, 47, of Gainesville, was seen pushing two bicycles across the street near 200 NW Eighth Ave. at about 8 a.m., according to a Gainesville Police arrest report.

An officer went up to Smith and asked what he was doing with the bikes, the report said. Smith told him he had owned the bicycles for three years.

The officer saw a University Police decal on one of the bicycles and contacted who it was registered to, the report said. The owner of the bicycle said his and his roommate's bicycles were stolen.

The owner went to the scene and said the bicycles belonged to them, the report said.

Smith continued to say that the bicycles were his but did not say how he got them, the report said. The officer searched Smith and found a hammer wrapped in fabric he believed Smith used to break the bicycle locks.

Smith was charged with petit theft, the report said.

He has been found guilty of four theft charges since 2014 and each one was for stealing bicycles, according to court records. His last bicycle theft was in 2016.

He remained in the Alachua County Jail on Monday in lieu of a $20,000 bond.
