Gainesville residents should sleep with an extra blanket tonight.
A hard freeze warning will start at midnight and be done by Wednesday at 10 a.m., said Will Corless, a meteorologist at the Jacksonville Weather Forecast office. He said this will be the first hard freeze, low temperatures going under 26 degrees, Gainesville will have for this winter.
He said the lowest temperature should be about 26 degrees tonight and that the weather should go back to 50 degrees overnight Thursday.
The city activated the cold night shelter program at the St. Francis House and GRACE Marketplace from Sunday night to Tuesday night.
With these freezing temperatures, UF experts from the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences are ready to help people with protecting their landscapes, crops and livestock, said Kirsten Romaguera, UF IFAS public relations specialist, in an email.
