A shootout is rare, especially in SEC play. But that is exactly what the recipe reads for Saturday’s matchup between No. 4 Ole Miss (3-0, 1-0 SEC) and freshly No. 21 Florida (3-0, 1-0 SEC).
Two of the SEC’s most explosive offenses prepare for battle, with both teams having scored more than 110 points across their first three games. Florida ranks in the top five nationally in total yards per game (544.3) and yards per play (7.97) and is No. 1 in points per possession.
On the other hand, the Rebels rank 46th nationally with 444.7 yards per game but have faced significantly tougher competition than the Gators.
“Last week's performance will not cut it; Ole Miss is well coached, talented and a huge challenge,” Head coach Jon Sumrall said. “We need a great home-field advantage Saturday. I think we'll have an awesome crowd.”
The Gators and Rebels are tied at 13-13-1 in the all-time series. Florida has not lost to Ole Miss at home since 2008.
Many remember the sting of that 31-30 loss for what transpired afterward: Tim Tebow’s famous “I Promise” speech. The rest is history, as Tebow led the 2008 Gators to Florida’s third national championship.
Florida has lost its last 12 meetings against AP top-five opponents, with its last victory coming against No. 5 Georgia in 2020. Ironically, the last time Ole Miss entered The Swamp ranked in the top five was in 2015, when Florida defeated the No. 3 Rebels 38-10.
The oddsmakers opened Florida as a 1.5-point favorite this weekend, and the line has since moved up two points to -3.5, according to Hard Rock Bet. The over/under is set at 60.5, projecting a high-scoring contest.
Sumrall admitted he couldn’t believe his team was favored against Ole Miss, saying, “Yeah, there’s a lot of good drugs out there, huh?”
Arguably the Heisman frontrunner, Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has been nothing short of excellent this season. Chambliss is 77-of-110 passing for 924 yards, ranking ninth among FBS quarterbacks.
Chambliss is also a threat on the ground — something Sumrall is all too familiar with. The sixth-year rushed for a season-high 112 yards against his former school, Tulane. In the College Football Playoff game between the Green Wave and Rebels, Chambliss continued his success against Sumrall’s team, rushing for two touchdowns.
Junior defensive lineman Jayden Woods will be a key factor for Florida’s defensive line as it looks to pressure Chambliss. Woods said Chambliss’ ability to not only pass effectively but also run the ball presents a major challenge for the defense. But the Gators are excited for it, he added.
Like Sumrall, Woods is no stranger to Chambliss. The defensive lineman recorded his first career interception off Chambliss on Ole Miss’ first play of its third drive last November.
“It’s good to think about it and reflect. But that was last year. Right now, I’m going to focus on this weekend,” Woods said.
Chambliss’ right-hand man is wide receiver Deuce Alexander. The senior was a major retention for the Rebels following Lane Kiffin’s exodus. He wasted no time making an impact in Ole Miss’ opener, catching five passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns.
A major question heading into the weekend is the health of Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacy. With nine minutes remaining in the third quarter against LSU, Lacy ran up the middle and landed on his left shoulder after being tackled. He missed the remainder of the game.
It was the same shoulder on which Lacy underwent offseason surgery. As of Tuesday, he is considered a game-time decision.
This isn’t the first time this season the star running back has gone down. In the opener against Louisville, Lacy missed part of the second half with a thigh bruise.
He is a major factor in Ole Miss’ offense flow. Lacy wasted no time showcasing his impact against LSU. In the first quarter, he rushed for 43 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. Ole Miss led 24-7 at halftime and appeared poised for a blowout victory. However, after Lacy’s injury, LSU scored 17 unanswered points before Ole Miss’ eventual game-winning touchdown drive.
Across the field, Aaron Philo will look to lead Florida’s offense and keep pace with the Rebels’ attack. Philo has been an ideal game-managing quarterback for the Gators, allowing his playmakers to do the heavy lifting.
But Florida’s X factor is its run game. On the ground, the Gators’ rushing attack exploited an Auburn run defense that allowed 76.5 yards per game before Florida rushed for 243 yards.
Arguably another top contender for the Heisman Trophy, running back Jadan Baugh has the potential for another breakout performance against a weak Ole Miss run defense. The Rebels have allowed 159 rushing yards per game, while the Gators average 246 yards on the ground.
Moreover, Ole Miss’s defense has 46 missed tackles (the second most in the Power Four), while Baugh has forced 30, the most in the FBS.
Baugh is coming off a 164-yard, three-touchdown performance. Sophomore Duke Clark has provided a reliable complement to Baugh. Against Auburn, Clark tallied seven carries for 50 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown run on third-and-goal.
Sophomore wide receiver Vernell Brown III has emerged as a veteran leader among the Gators, which is remarkable for a player who is only 19 years old.
“I would say I’ve always kind of been more of a vocal leader; I’ve never been scared to speak up,” Brown said.
Brown has paced the Gators with 246 receiving yards and will look to capitalize on Ole Miss’ defensive weaknesses. The Rebels’ secondary struggled with communication and defensive assignments, surrendering 12 explosive plays (20 yards or more) for 340 yards against.
