Former UF basketball player charged with DUI

Former UF basketball player Dan Werner was arrested early Tuesday morning for driving under the influence.

Werner, 23, who graduated from UF in spring 2010, was pulled over after midnight in the 100 block of Northwest 75th Street by Alachua County Sheriff’s deputy Jahmal Ervin for driving with high beams on and no tag light, according to the police report.

Werner, who currently plays professional basketball  for Kaposvari KK in Hungary, told Ervin that he was only driving because his girlfriend had been drinking, but the officer said he could smell the alcohol on Werner and noticed his eyes were red and watery.

Werner admitted to drinking two whiskey drinks before getting in the car. Ervin then had him step out of the car and complete some field sobriety tests, which he failed.

Werner was then arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

Werner submitted to breath tests that found his blood alcohol level at 0.065 and 0.07. The legal limit in Florida is 0.08.

Werner was released from jail on his own recognizance at 11:23 a.m. Tuesday by Judge Denise Ferrero on the condition he will make his future court date.

At a press conference Tuesday, UF basketball coach Billy Donovan said that he had not been in contact with Werner since the arrest.

“I feel bad for him,” Donovan said. “I don’t know all the details. I’m sure I’ll have a chance to talk to him, but I don’t know all that happened there.”
