Alachua County COVID-19 curve appears to be flattening, local health officials say

  • The county commission voted to decrease the occupancy limit from one person per every 1,000 square feet to one person per every 750 square feet. 

  • Alachua County Health Department administrator Paul Myers said the infection rates appear to be steady, but there is no downshift yet. 

Alachua County has at least 580 online reports of emergency order violations

  • The operation of non-essential businesses or unsafe workplace conditions, for example, can be reported via the county’s online portal or 311 hotline. 

  • Code enforcement and law enforcement, if needed, will be called for businesses that don’t comply with regulations under the statewide stay-at-home order.

  • Father David Ruchinski conducted Easter mass to a Facebook livestream in an empty church.

  • A UF student pivoted from her yearly tradition of making a bunny-shaped cake with her siblings and grandmother, attending mass and congregating for a family dinner. 

Gainesville Jewish community overcomes social distancing for Passover

  • UF’s Jewish community center distributed more than 200 to-go Seder kits, which were paid for by donations. 

  • UF Hillel hosted a Seder via Zoom, and a UF student who received a take-home kit said her vegetarian food restrictions were accommodated while she celebrated the birth of the Jewish nation virtually. 

Burials are changing to accommodate social distancing

  • Local funeral homes are limiting the amount of people who can gather to grieve the passing of loved ones to adhere to social distancing guidelines. 

  • At Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery, burials of those who passed as a result of COVID-19 will only be attended by one staff member without the company of family members.
