Are celebrity cookbooks ‘culinary’?

Americans love cookbooks, and this is especially apparent in recent years. In 1961, 49 cookbooks were published. In 2001, more than 1,700 were published, with an astounding 530 million books on food and alcohol sold in the U.S. in 2000. Furthermore, cookbooks are the only genre of print books to maintain sales after 9/11 and to increase in sales during the 2009 recession.

For Your Entertainment: British singer drops new album in the States

English singer-songwriter Jasmine van den Bogaerde (better known by her stage name, Birdy), released her sophomore album, Fire Within, in the United States on June 3. Birdy rose to fame in the United Kingdom in 2008 after winning the national Open Mic competition at the age of 12. But it wasn’t until her cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” went viral that she gained international recognition. Her eponymous debut album featured 11 tracks, which consisted of covers of songs like The xx’s “Shelter”and The National’s “Terrible Love”, as well as two original tracks.

Electronic dance music, or EDM for short, has quickly become a formidable genre in the always-dynamic world of music. Once a genre many wrote off for a variety of reasons (notably the way most songs abstained from including lyrics or the repetitive nature when compared to pop songs), it is now the most profitable genre in the world. It has its own culture, it appeals to the young and old alike, and it has created a movement in the way it has altered other genres (most seen in numerous pop songs today).

You might not even give a second thought to the growing uneasiness you experience. This schedule is a fairly ordinary one for a college student and you probably assume anxiety is inevitable.
