‘Their legacy will live on’: Students remember MSD victims

Seventeen white luminaries with the names of the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting surrounded them, serving as a reminder of the painful second anniversary. March for Our Lives Gainesville hosted a vigil on Plaza of the Americas Friday night to honor the victims.

MSD alum Anisha Saripalli, an 18-year-old biomedical engineering sophomore and the March for Our Lives Gainesville treasurer, writes the name of her friend down on the gun violence victim board. Carmen Schentrup was a Marjory Stoneman Douglas student who died in the shooting just days after she was accepted into UF.

Harry Jones, a 61-year-old formerly incarcerated Alachua County resident, registers to vote Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, at the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections office. Jones, who has been out of prison for 13 years, had his right to vote restored after Amendment 4 passed in the 2018 midterm election. Tuesday was the first day Amendment 4 was put into effect. About 50 people registered to vote in Alachua County, said TJ Pyche, the elections office spokesperson.
