Santa Fe College announced it narrowed its search for a new provost to three finalists Wednesday afternoon, after a search to replace Provost Edward Bonahue.
In compliance with Gov. Ron DeSantis’ aspirations for state education, the Florida College System is evaluating curricula from all 28 state colleges for traces of “woke” ideology.
SFC’s Academy of Science and Technology, a new charter school initiative that will be run inside of the college’s northwest campus at 3000 NW 83 St, will offer students starting in ninth grade an associate’s of science degree in addition to a high school diploma. At a Thursday night meeting, prospective parents learned more about programs and application processes.
SFC welcomes students of all ages. Students older than 25 made up more than 20% of SFC’s Fall 2021 enrollment. This amount has remained consistent throughout the years at the college, according to the Santa Fe factbook. Nonetheless, older students have thrived in SFC’s diverse environment.
Santa Fe Academy of Science and Technology will be the first of its kind in Gainesville by having a curriculum offering college courses and industry certifications that comes with no costs or specific requirements from students.
Santa Fe College canceled classes starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
The Alachua County Heart Walk made its return to Santa Fe College for the first time since 2019 after three years held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Attendees gathered at Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall to hear Padilla and five SFC Master Artist Series students perform. The event raised money for the Climb for Cancer Foundation.
SFC’s food pantry, Saints Food Share, encountered an increased demand for food from students since school started, Sarah Blanc, a SFC civic engagement and service specialist, said: The pantry is getting three times the number of normal requests for food ahead of its Hunger Action Month Food Drive.

College for Kids, a program hosted by Santa Fe, allows kids to use summer to immerse themselves in subjects typically not taught until college. Registration for the 2022 camp opened May 4.
Santa Fe College upholds its plans to host a limited-capacity graduation ceremony in April despite lifting all COVID-19 restrictions. Santa Fe College students and employees can get $60 for their COVID-19 vaccinations as of Jan. 28. SF announced their second voluntary COVID-19 vaccine incentive, similar to the one in Fall 2021 that resulted in over 2,700 people getting vaccinated, according to the Santa Fe website.
The food pantry was founded in 2010 by two SF professors: Sarah Stone and Kerry Chancey. The pantry aims to combat food insecurity in the community.
There were two fewer reported cases than the previous week.
The program places Santa Fe college counselors in every high school in Alachua and Bradford counties. The goal is to provide scholarships and textbook stipends, and show high school students higher education options — from community colleges and trade schools to four-year universities.
