According to data from the 2025-26 school year, some Alachua County Public Schools in East Gainesville were well below capacity. The Duval Early Learning Academy was less than one-third full as of February 2026, enrolling just 119 students of its 408-student capacity. Lake Forest Elementary School is just over 40% full, filling about 250 seats of its nearly 600-student capacity.

Over 50 members of the East Gainesville community gathered at Day Springs Missionary Baptist Church Monday to discuss Alachua County Public Schools’ rezoning plans.
For some community members, concerns over the rezoning aren’t specific to the closure of just one school, but rather a pattern of closures across East Gainesville, which is home to Porters Quarters and other historically Black neighborhoods.

A proposal to add 149 single-family homes to an 82-acre rezoning is being led by Adams Homes and Garden Street Communities. Porters Quarters is a historically Black neighborhood in East Gainesville founded in 1884 by Canadian physician Dr. Watson Porter, who only sold real estate to African Americans. As the neighborhood continues to battle gentrification among student housing and downtown expansions, the lack of communication between the city and the neighborhood worries residents. The most recent construction has left residents perplexed.
