Food and memory: Mention ‘Proust’s madeleines’ like a pro

Food is more than just nutrients. Food conjures up memories and reveals who we are and who we are not. What we eat is a medium for personal recollection and collective identity. Marcel Proust, the great French author, is famous for connecting food and memory with madeleines, “those squat plump little cakes.” We certainly have him to thank for those little packages of “petite French cakes” at every Starbucks checkout.

Notebook: SEC TV schedule announced, UF lands recruits

There might not be real football to be played until late August, but that doesn’t stop news from breaking around the Southeastern Conference. In the past week, SEC football TV schedules were announced, Florida’s 2015 recruiting class picked up two commitments and a former Gator national champion announced his return to the Gainesville campus.

Who's influencing Americans: politicians or comedians?

It seems as though everyone wants to be influential. And why not? Our society consecrates those select few who can claim to hold influence. Time magazine publishes an annual list of influencers. The online edition of Forbes continues to feature articles that inform the common man on how to spread his influence around the workplace. Those influencers in the public eye take to the speaking circuit to cash in on their success.
