Although summer is filled with new music releases to jam out to at the beach, on a road trip or whatever you find yourself doing during the season, podcasts are also a great addition to your playlist. Usually spanning over the course of multiple episodes, podcasts are a perfect way to learn more about the world around you.

From Tom Petty to Less Than Jake, many an artist have gone from humble Gainesville beginnings to international fame. While massive tours and sold-out crowds may be the norm for these musicians nowadays, each and every one of them got their start in the local scene, opening for larger acts within their genre and slowly but surely gaining a fanbase.
Consider Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy,” Omi’s “Cheerleader” and The Chainsmokers’ “Closer.” What do all of these songs have in common? They were all summertime releases that dominated the charts in 2014, 2015 and 2016, respectively. Summer is a big season for music releases since people are looking for soundtracks to their vacations, roadtrips and other activities. As the season gets closer, here are some recent releases to help you start curating your summer playlist.
Gainesville’s groundbreaking new theater festival, Summer Shakes, will address sexism and unequal representation within the theater community by producing two Shakespeare plays performed exclusively by a female-identifying cast.

In March, Gainesville-based punk trio UV-TV released their debut full length album, “Glass.” Having spent the last couple of years making their rounds through Gainesville clubs and going on brief tours of the East Coast, UV-TV made a name for themselves in Florida. However, 2017 finds these three Gainesville punks thinking bigger. They signed to Canadian-based label Deranged Records, which released “Glass,” and they are currently on a tour of the U.S. lasting about a month, which will be their longest to date.

That is why shopping second hand is so great for college students: Besides being environmentally friendly, it saves money. Through extensive research (and probably too much money and time), I have amassed a list of some secondhand clothing stores to check out, and others to steer clear of.
