Knack, a tutoring app created by a UF student in December 2015, allows users to find other students on campus who have experience in different classes. The $20 an hour, peer tutoring app will be expanding to other schools, including the University of South Florida and Florida State University, within the next year.

Samyr Qureshi created an app after learning to play the guitar.

Qureshi, a 23-year-old UF criminology and law alumnus, said after learning how to play the instrument, he realized he could help people learn other subjects with a tutoring app - an app he called Knack.

“I was thinking it would be great to learn from a peer instead of an expert,” he said.

He launched Knack in 2015, and it is now available to UF students. The app’s move to Gainesville comes after the University of Central Florida made it the school’s official tutoring service.

Knack is styled like Uber, Qureshi said, and, for $20 an hour, it allows struggling students to contact people who have already passed a problematic class.

It will be expanding to other schools, including the University of South Florida and Florida State University, within the next year, Qureshi said.

It all started in June 2015 when the Global Summit competition invited 500 creators to showcase their ideas.

“It’s like the Model UN for tech geeks,” Qureshi said.

In the end, Qureshi won first place with his app.

Any time a Knack user needs help with finance classes, Ismail Abushamma, a 23-year-old UF finance alumnus, receives a notification on his phone.

With more than 50,000 students at UF, people may not always feel like their voices are being heard, he said.

“Tutors on Knack give you that attention and understand your weaknesses,” Abushamma said.
