Maybe I?ve heard "Sweet Home Alabama" too many times, but the announcement that Lynyrd Skynyrd will be a feature act at Gator Growl is somewhat less than exciting. It is essentially a cover band now. Ringo Starr doesn?t tour with three people and call it The Beatles. For ,150,000 I think we could find something better.
Coupled with comedic powerhouse Frank Caliendo, this show is sure to please MADtv fans everywhere. I understand the Gator Growl team wants to find acts with mass appeal, but the event is touted as the "largest student-run pep rally in the world." Maybe the interests of the students should weigh more heavily in the selection of the entertainment. Florida State University had Stephen Colbert last year, and this year it has Sarah Silverman. If that caliber of talent is available to them, I?d think we could pull some more current acts as well.
But there is one good thing about Lynyrd Skynyrd playing: The guy who shouts "Freebird" at this show will have his request fulfilled.
