You can't spell "disgusting" without SDS.

Students for a Democratic Society staged an event Monday designed to raise awareness for the death toll of the Iraq war by having 24 blood-covered students "die" on Turlington Plaza.

Regardless of whether we agree with the war (we don't), we do not think students should cover themselves in fake blood on a college campus to get their point across.

It was bad enough the event was held at 12:30, when most students were probably on their way to eat lunch.

School shootings occur more frequently now than ever before. With Wednesday's high-school shooting in Cleveland and April's rampage at Virginia Tech, even extreme minds like those students in SDS should realize that the times are not right to simulate dead students on campus.

The group says it will have a different awareness-raising event every weekday until its larger "No War, No Warming" protest Oct. 22.

We don't want to stop SDS from its protesting efforts, ineffective as they may be. We just hope its future events take a more dignified - and less bloody - approach.
