Congrats, Gator Party.
It looks like your proteges in UF's Student Senate learned well, and after being sworn in earlier this month, they are already doing what they were recruited to do: Keep the Gator machine running, unopposed and unimpeded.
The committee that nominates senators for Senate committee memberships, the Replacement and Agenda Committee, met late on Sunday behind locked doors in the Reitz Union. No minutes were taken at the meeting. But put aside the state's Sunshine Laws about open meetings and records, which Senate President Pro-tempore MaryGrace Bell said "will be followed" from now on.
The real offense here is that four Orange and Blue Party senators who applied for a spot on a committee were turned down.
All four represent the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which, with more than 14,000 students, is UF's largest college. And members of Student Government wonder why they're irrelevant outside of SG offices in the Reitz Union.
The Gator Party ran on the promise it would be responsive to students. We can't see how shutting out the representatives from the university's largest college is being responsive to anything but Gator's interests.
At this point, this can't even be called party politics - that would be making a mockery of what goes on in the semi-productive bodies that meet in Washington and Tallahassee. To have that, you would need two parties who share at least some power.
In SG, one party can't get inside the building, let alone do anything productive.
