Getting to know what and which numbers can be recycled in Gainesville

Recycling is more than just finishing off your gallon of milk, rinsing it out and tossing it in a blue recycling bin.

On each plastic container is a number stamped inside the recycling symbol.

While recycling is important, what can be recycled depends on where you live and your town's recycling policies.

According to Sustainable UF's website, SP Recycling, the company that does all the recyclable collecting, only collects certain numbers.

SP Recycling collects No. 1 containers, which are mostly small bottles, such as water bottles. They collect No. 2 containers, which are clear or colored jugs, such as gallons of milk or laundry detergent bottles. Finally they collect No. 3-7 bottles, like the container your shampoo comes in.

However, they don't collect all No. 3-7 plastics. The plastic basket that strawberries come in or your red Solo cups can't be recycled because there is no market for them yet.

According to Alachua County's website, aluminum cans, soup cans, aerosol containers, yogurt cups, newspapers, magazines and more can all be recycled.
