Gainesville Police are searching for a man wanted on charges of attempted murder after he fired shots at an apartment complex near UF's East Campus Tuesday afternoon.

GPD responded to a report of shots being fired in the Stone Quarters apartment complex at 645 NE Waldo Road around 2:20 p.m.

UF sent an emergency text message and email to students around 2:45 p.m.

Timothy Lawrence, 35, told police that he was confronted by 19-year-old Tyrone Thomas and another man in front of his home.

Lawrence told police the second man handed Thomas a .380 semiautomatic handgun from his waistband, and Thomas said, "You know what time it is."

Thomas then fired about four shots, but none of them hit Lawrence, said Cpl. Angelina Valuri, public information officer for GPD.

Thomas and the man fled south into the woods, but a police dog search and a search by helicopter were unsuccessful, Valuri said.

Valuri said Lawrence was a suspect in the Dec. 9 burglary of Thomas' home. He was later arrested and charged with burglary.

Police are looking for Thomas who faces attempted murder charges.

Anyone with information on the suspect or the incident should contact GPD at 352-955-1818. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 352-372-7867.
