The election is over. That means everybody needs to get off their high horses and preaching grounds and go back to their daily lives. Please.
The immature way in which Americans received the election results was enough to make one question our “superpower” status – where is the America the world looks to for guidance and strength, for innovation and hope?
Because I don’t see it.
Rather than a simple letdown, Republicans seemed to view the election as a sign of 2012’s final, impending doom. Scrolling through my Facebook, I saw pleas to God to save our country, name-calling of “those dumb people” who don’t know who they voted for, and an all-around excitement… for 2016.
On the Democrat side, gone was the unifying “Yes We Can” that was heard around the world in 2008. To be honest, they seemed more excited to have beaten Mitt Romney than to have won control of the executive branch of our country – I mean really, it’s no big deal or anything.
My positivity and excitement around the election in general plummeted the day after when I happened to see a post on Mitt Romney’s Facebook: a simple, “Thank you” picture. I thought to myself, well that was a nice, classy way to bow out, with no reminiscing on health care plans or last-second calls for a birth certificate. Then I glanced at the first comment: “LOL U LOST.”
Really? Is that what our country has come to? We go on Facebook to jeer at an accomplished politician? (For regardless of party lines, Mitt Romney has succeeded in gaining a huge following without any large scandal or significant failure, which is a great achievement for anyone in politics).
But seriously, to the guy wearing a beanie in his profile picture who felt the need to post such an intelligent comment: ouch. I’m sure Mitt Romney really heard your comment, took it to heart, and will use it to change the country. Your inner thought was definitely something worth sharing with the world.
So again, the election is over. We can all stop whining about political ads and saying we are registered to vote and arguing about which politician was stupider. Barack Obama will be the President of the United States, the POTUS, for the next four years.
For the rest of us, we can’t stay on Facebook forever. If we really want change, if we really want a new direction, we all have to do something more than like a page or post a comment.
The question now is, what are the rest of us going to do for our country?
