We all dread the words, “We need to talk.” It’s the universal code for, “Hey this just really isn’t working out, maybe it’s better off if we’re friends.” Unfortunately, break ups are a part of life and sometimes we wait too long to have the conversation. We’ll search for that right time to do it, or wait our partner messes up so our reasoning is even better. The reality is though; it’s never going to get easier. You just have to recognize when it’s time to call it quits, and do it.

One of my friends from home struggled with this for a long time. He had been dating his girlfriend since his freshman year of high school. At first it was typical “high school love.” They were cheesy and adorable, and everyone loved them. Over the years though, their relationship changed.

“Our phone conversations were shorter, and when we went on dates we were both so glued to our phones that we barely even looked at each other. I was in denial for the last year of our relationship. It was a small town, and all of our friends and family were interconnected, I didn’t want to burn any bridges.”

I think that’s one of the biggest worries all of us have when it comes to breaking up, especially in college. We usually meet our boyfriend or girlfriend through mutual friends, and we’re scared of what will happen to that friendship when our relationships end.

“After graduation, I knew it had to be done. I wasn’t going to make both of us go through college and possibly miss out on finding the right person for us. It was hard, but I did it, and now we’re both in new relationships, happier than we ever were before.”

There you have it guys. It’s a hard thing to do, especially if you’re the dumper, but the excitement of being newly single after (once you get over the grieving period), puts everything else in the back of your mind.
