For Your Entertainment: The Bachelorette is the ultimate summer show

There are no shortage of great love stories out there—Romeo and Juliet, The Notebook, The Way We Were and hundreds more; The Bachelorette is not one of those stories.

While ABC’s dramatic reality show about one woman dating 25 men to find her soulmate isn’t exactly wholesome, it’s the perfect show for summer.

This season’s finale will air next Monday and Bachelorette Andi will choose either to marry Nick or Josh. If you haven’t ever watched, now is a great time to tune in.

Andi’s season has been more culturally topical than most due to the “contestants” dealing with racism and the death of one of the men vying for Andi’s affection.

I consider myself a pretty practical person and I’m fully aware of the ridiculousness of the concept of The Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise. However, it’s hard not to become a believer when these people are confessing their love on an island with the perfect camera angles and swelling music.

One of the reasons college women (and their mothers) keep coming back to The Bachelorette is because no matter how over-the-top it gets, the viewers are pretty much guaranteed a predictable, happy ending.

Phrases like “perfect place to fall in love”, “letting your guard down” and “journey to love” will 100 percent be thrown around in every episode and there’s something oddly comforting about that.

Whether you’re watching it ironically or you genuinely believe these men and women thought a reality show was the best place to find a spouse, after weeks of watching tears and dates you’ll actually want to see a marriage proposal.

A majority of the time the engagement doesn’t work out and it makes the entire process seem like a sham (which it probably is). But every once in a while it somehow works out and gives romantics everywhere faith.

If nothing else, it’s an excellent excuse to break out that bottle of wine and pint of ice cream you’ve been saving.
