A fire Saturday afternoon caused about $20,000 in damages at the Curia on the Drag property.

At 12:03 p.m., fire rescue responded to a fire at 2029 NW Sixth St., authorities said. It began in the common attic above the coffee and tea shop’s properties including an Airbnb rental space, Curia on the Drag and La Chua Vintage Clothing, Gainesville Fire Rescue district chief James Lovvorn said. It burned from the attic space into an end of the Airbnb building.

Firefighters found heavy smoke from the attic space when they arrived, officials said. They entered the building and extinguished the fire.

Firefighters cut holes through the ceiling to put the attic fire out, Lovvorn said. Fire damage was contained to the front portion of the buildings, specifically an office area, and did not include the restaurant or other businesses.

GFR believes the fire started near the AC unit in the attic. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to authorities.

No guests were in the Airbnb at the time and no injuries occurred, Lovvorn said. Damages from the fire are estimated to be around $20,000.

Traffic was blocked from the 1600 to 2300 block of Sixth Street for several hours following the fire where fire trucks were parked, but roads are now open.
