Without a given reason, the city of Gainesville will be losing a high-ranking staff member next year.
On a letter dated Nov. 17, Gainesville Assistant City Manager Fred Murry sent in his resignation for his position effective March 1.
The city official thanked Anthony Lyons, the Gainesville City Manager, for the opportunities given during his tenure, according to the letter.
“I am more than grateful to have had the opportunity of working with such great teams,” Murry wrote.
Murry declined to comment further on the matter, said city of Gainesville spokesperson Chip Skinner. There was no specified reason behind the departure, Skinner said.
No relevant disciplinary records regarding Fred Murry as Assistant City Manager are on file, wrote Christopher Beatty, the city’s senior executive assistant, in an email.
It’s possible Murry was ready to move on to his next career step, said City Commissioner David Arreola.
“I’m sad to see Fred go, but I fully expect him to find a wonderful opportunity,” Arreola said. “He’s always been a really fantastic assistant city manager.”
During Murry’s tenure, the commissioners appreciated his help with putting more staff on a project to help with the city’s affordable housing issue, Arreola said. Murry’s ambition and approachability made him excellent at his job, he said.
“He’s got to make a choice about what’s next in his career, and I wish him all the best,” Arreola said.
