The University of Florida rescinded its hybrid work agreement for all UF employees in an email Thursday morning.

Interim President Kent Fuchs asked UF Human Resources to “oversee a full return to in-person work over the next 30 days for employees currently working under remote or hybrid arrangements,” he wrote in the email.

UF faculty and staff switched to hybrid or remote schedules during the COVID-19 pandemic due to space constraints, Fuchs wrote. UF plans to shift its work model to mirror national trends in business, education and government jobs, which are returning to in-person work.

Physical workspaces promote stronger community bonds, he said, enhancing collaborative opportunities for creative problem-solving.

The Chief Financial Office, Provost’s Office and the Office of Construction, Facilities and Real Estate will work closely with UFHR to address space constraints, he said.

The decision comes one week before Fuchs’ contract as Interim President is set to end on July 31. UF has since taken down its workplace arrangement page.

UF spokesperson Steve Orlando wrote in an email that 10% of UF employees work under a hybrid arrangement, and roughly 1% are fully remote. UF’s alternate work location policy has been in place since 2001, he said, but is now being revoked.

Throughout all semesters, UF offers remote or hybrid classes. The university also runs the UF Online program, which allows students to pursue 27 bachelor's degree programs in a fully virtual environment.

Of the 2,402 Fall 2025 undergraduate courses, 581 are classified as online or hybrid, with 525 being fully online, according to one.uf

UF spokesperson Cynthia Roldan said the university can’t currently confirm how the change will affect professors teaching remote classes.
