This Thanksgiving and during the holiday break, many of us will be traveling home. During the long car ride or the family vacation our parents planned, we tend to eat on the unhealthy side.

That mgiht be because it's so easy to stop on the highway at a service plaza and grab a greasy, fried burger. But this year could be the first where you can eat healthy during your travels if you follow these tips.

First, remember to drink. You think because your driving in a car with air conditioning, you can't dehydrate. Trust me, you can. I often fall victim to this. Try and take a sip of water every 20 miles or so. Juices work well, too. Avoid soda and especially alcohol. If you are travelling to a different time zone, those do not help with jet lag.

Next, prepare healthier alternatives to eat in the car. Pack up on granola bars and fruit. Pretzels work really well, too — not only are they healthy but full of protein to help keep you awake.

Also, make sure you eat before you leave. You won't have to stop because you are hungry. It will give you energy and prepare you for the day's activities. With food in your system, you are less likely to get car sick, if you are prone to that.

I hope you all have a good Thanksgiving! Enjoy your time with your family.

Remember to travel healthy on your way back to Gainesville!
