OPINION: They can play, but they can’t celebrate

On Feb. 26, the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team took home the gold medal for the first time in over four decades. Directly after the win, the team spoke with Trump on the phone, and the president facetiously claimed he would be forced to invite the women’s team to celebrate alongside the men. If he didn’t, Trump said, they would “impeach him.”

UF can’t fight hunger while defunding transit

Despite the countless initiatives, services and even new grocery stores appearing in Gainesville, food insecurity is back on the rise as of late 2025, with local food shelters such as Deeper Purpose Community Food Ministries reporting an increase from 10 to 40 phone calls per day directed toward food assistance.

I attended my first Gator football games as a freshman. I get the hype now.

Before arriving at UF, I never truly understood the thrill of college game day. My parents were never particularly big football fans, let alone college football. Even though I grew up in Miami, I only went to one University of Miami football game (don’t worry, I believe orange goes much better with blue than green), and even then, the atmosphere wasn’t as impressive as what I have already experienced here.

Mayor Ward Welcomes You Back

Welcome back to fall in Gainesville! Yes, I know it’s technically still summer, and I know it’s still hot. It’s going to be this way for a bit, but I promise you there’s no better place to be than right here in Gator Country right now.

I applied to The Alligator to become a copy editor over a year ago as a last-minute decision, kicking off what would become one of the most rewarding times of my life.

Welcome back, you ready?

It’s a bit chillier this week than when you left, but at least we’re not living in an imitation of the ice planet Hoth from “Star Wars,” like many states north of us. A special shout-out to you if you came back from there. Welcome back to the sunshine.

No Fats. No Fems. The Plight of the Gay Community

But we’ve all seen the same perfectly curated bio where instead of normally dictating likes and dislikes to potential matches, people take it one step further. “No Fats. No Fems. No Asians.” There are various bios with different distinctions that all follow this similar sentiment of excluding groups of queer people in the name of preference. Is this truly just a preference, or have we exemplified the division of an already marginalized community through discriminatory phrases under the guise of preference?

The role of education and its necessary securities

I align ideologically with Thomas Jefferson’s principles of free inquiry through the role of education, however, I find it necessary to establish the safety of citizens beforehand. In the case of education, information in college courses can be potentially harmful to specific minorities. Professors should have careful consideration in what they decide to relay to their students.
