Ode to Florida and its weather

Oh, Florida! Land of sunshine and sea spray, with your miles of beaches and acres of swamp, how I have loved your climate in times both warm and slightly less warm. The bountiful depths of your balmy seas are perturbed only by visiting vagabond hurricanes; your peaceful air troubled only by the wind of mosquito wings; your clouds are as lofty and gray as the pristine God himself. For all the trouble you cause, we love you more and more ardently.

On Student Government salaries

One of the more interesting practices of our lovely Student Government here at UF is that we actually pay some of our students in certain positions. Usually people don’t really talk about it much, more than the yearly SG debate question of if one will take or donate their salary. That being said, I was happy to see The Alligator article by the SG reporter on current Student Body President Ian Green using a bit of his salary toward buying suits for recent high school graduates from his hometown since it both illustrates a heartwarming use of one’s salary and also touched upon the topic of how much SG officials are paid.

UF grad likely first Kuwaiti woman to pass D.C. bar

A UF graduate became possibly the first woman from Kuwait to pass the February 2018 Washington, D.C., Bar Exam. Accurate records aren’t kept of nationalities of those who pass. But according to James Klausner, a UF engineering professor, a lack of Kuwaiti women in the field makes it a strong possibility she’s the first.

Man charged with DUI

Florida Highway Patrol arrested a man Sunday after he allegedly collided with another car while driving under the influence with a dog in the car.Jeffery Holland, 58, was driving a gold-colored Saturn when the incident occurred on State Road 26 and NE 47th Street, according to the arrest report. At about 12:15 p.m., the front of the Saturn collided with the rear end of a gray Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Changing tides of time

My Preview counselor did a great job of laying out a roadmap for being a UF student. She told me about what college will be like going forward: how I’d build a work ethic and collegiate-level study habits, find a group of friends that I’d keep for a lifetime and develop myself professionally and spiritually. Preview readies you for changes you’ll see to your student persona. What it can never prepare you for is seeing your hometown change right out from underneath you.
