The Avenue Guide to Summer Music Festivals

Music festivals have basically become a staple for summertime adventures. Although we still have about five weeks until the semester ends, festival veterans know tickets are already selling out, and preparation for what’s to come starts way in advance. Keep in mind you might need a hotel, it’s going to be really, really hot, and you’ll probably forget to pack something when you put it off right before leaving. Whether you’re traveling far to attend one or just sticking to Florida-based festivals, this guide will help you know what to expect.

Long overdue album from Mikky Ekko a rollercoaster of emotions

Artist Mikky Ekko started the year off with the release of his debut LP, “Time,” which felt long overdue for fans who discovered his passion-driven vocals after his feature on Rihanna’s hit song, “Stay.” Ekko bares his soul on each of the 12 tracks on the album, which was released Jan. 20. His album references the concept of love and time all the way through. Each song provides diverse sound, perspective and emotion to the listeners who lend their ears to this album.

Glorious heap of rock: Q&A with Kyle Thomas, aka King Tuff

You may or may not have heard about King Tuff, but you knew someone like him once. He was the guy perpetually in and out of rock bands in high school, the guy in the faded Black Sabbath T-shirt reading a Richard Brautigan novel and the white guy who worshipped Jimi Hendrix. He was the guy you suspected might actually make it.

Indie-pop giant of Montreal talks new record, Gainesville appearance

If you’re dying for a taste of what’s to come on of Montreal’s next album, Aureate Gloom (dropping March 3 on Polyvinyl Records), here are some hints: It involves Talking-Heads-inspired funk, traces of pain and identity-searching following frontman Kevin Barnes’ separation from his wife in 2013 and a little bit of 1970s New York City.
