Ways to give back this weekend

In light of the recent tragedies in Orlando, I think all of us are looking for ways to give back to our community during this difficult time. Below are some things to do this weekend where your time and money will be going to those in need:

Movie Roundup: The best films to see this summer

It’s summer, which probably means you have lots of free time on your hands. It’s also Florida, which means it’s raining every afternoon and you have to spend a good amount of that free time inside. What better way to pass the rainy day away than catching some of summer’s hottest movies? Here’s the best ones of summer (some coming soon) with a little something for everyone.

Q&A: Danny Pynes

Danny Pynes, born and raised in Gainesville, has been a fixture on the local hip-hop scene for many years. After years of working and cultivating his sound, Pynes hit it big, touring around the country and gaining fans around the world. I sat down with him to talk about his Gainesville roots and making it to the big stage.

Q&A: Boyfriend Material

Boyfriend Material, a Gainesville band signed to Community Records, just released its first self-titled extended play and has become quite popular on the local music scene. Frontwoman Shauna Marie Healey, who sings, plays guitar and ukulele, was a solo artist for several years before recently adding Chris Chaires, Rob Paradise and Robert Carter to the group. I sat down with her to talk about the band’s start and expansion into their EP.

What’s happening in GNV this weekend

If there is one thing Gainesville residents can collectively agree on, it’s that there is a very dry season that comes around the time students pack up and leave for the summer. This dry period can leave those who call the ‘Ville home for the summer a tad frustrated. If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, then check out what’s happening.

Surviving Paris and other big cities

Before I left the U.S., I did a ton of research on each city and country I planned to visit in order to ensure as much safety as possible. There were quite a few horror stories about being pick-pocketed in places like Paris, but I figured I’d just use common sense. And I don’t want to speak prematurely, but it worked.

Gainesville band Duppies has been a staple on the local music scene for more than a decade. The band has toured up and down the East Coast, but the group still regularly plays shows around town.

Q&A: Duppies

Over the last decade, Duppies has become a staple band on the Gainesville music scene. The band has long played at venues all over town and has even taken their show on the road up and down the East Coast. I sat down with lead vocalist and percussionist Brian Hiebel to talk the band’s start and success.
