‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ honors the legacy of an extensive franchise

At the ripe young age of 7, sandwiched between my mom and a stranger in a packed theater, I saw “The Conjuring.” I was a self-deemed horror fanatic — even though my main horror knowledge at the time consisted of R.L. Stine’s “Goosebumps” — but I’d never truly experienced fear until that clapping game scene. I remember going to bed that night swearing my closet door moved on its own.

A Cannes-do attitude: Why you don’t need a music degree to make music

It’s 2003. John Fulford’s bachelor’s degree in finance stares back at the phone that never got a call back for a second interview at the bank. He instead tunes his guitar, scrabbles some more lyrics and burns another CD. It’s 2006. His master's degree in international business is itching to make it out of Gainesville. Instead of waiting on that phone to ring, he rings TV producers in Los Angeles pitching his abundant cache of music.  It’s 2024. Comedy-drama film “Anora” wins the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival — the Palme d’Or. His music is in the soundtrack, and his career is at its peak.

The Priest Theatre is seen at 15 NW 1st St. in High Springs on Sunday, July 23, 2023.

Community members support rebuilding local movie theater

The High Springs community lined up for public comment at the City Commission meeting July 13. The item on the docket is the latest local love story: the bond between High Springs and the Priest Theatre. The theater closed down during the COVID-19 pandemic and has remained closed ever since, losing its structural integrity with each passing day. But its community refuses to let it die.
