Pretty much everyone agrees that 2016 was a terrible year in general, but in a year with a lot of downs, we had some amazing music to carry us through those tough 365 days. There were dozens of perfect albums that came out last year, but here are my personal top 10 releases of 2016.
The University Gallery will open a new exhibit tonight called, “Lights, Camera, Cuba!” that will be open for the public until Feb. 10. The networking reception will be held today from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
You’ve now slept off your holiday food-coma, packed up your bags and suffered through the traffic on Archer Road. It’s here. The dreaded syllabus week where the campus is crowded with starry-eyed first-timers and returning students who have enough experience under their belt to know a little of what to expect in the upcoming term. Alcohol is a token remedy for those first tedious days, and what better way to start the semester than to show up hungover for your first couple of classes? Let’s drink!
Lance Howell might write the songs, play guitar, sing and handle the business ventures of his band, but he considers his bass player, Jacob Riley, the “secret weapon.”
Gainesville, sometimes thought of as just a college town, is known nationally for its music scene. Legendary punk acts like Against Me!, Hot Water Music and Less Than Jake made names for themselves in this small town during the ‘90s and early-2000s.
Music has the power to lift us up and carry us out of situations, whether those situations are just crossing the street or crossing the border.
With finals right around the corner, study hotspots on campus quickly overflow with stressed-out students and red coffee cups. This exam season, skip waiting in line at the Marston Science Library Starbucks or wandering through Library West for a place to settle. Instead, check out some of Gainesville’s most aesthetically pleasing cafes for quality coffee and a fun study experience.
This Sunday, UF’s College of the Arts and the School of Music will be holding the 67th annual “Sounds of the Season” concert with the theme “¡el Festival!” This concert will be held at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Since last Friday, the Hippodrome State Theatre has been performing a unique, comedic Christmas story. The show, “The Ultimate Christmas Show (Abridged),” will run until Dec. 18, with shows every day of the week besides Mondays.
The Weeknd has become one of the biggest artists over the past several years. Since making his debut in 2011, Abel Tesfaye has transcended into a hit-making superstar.
It’s been nearly a decade since we said goodbye to Lorelai and Rory, and still the “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” revival couldn’t have come a minute too soon. The revival brings the Gilmore girls into present day, complete with smartphones, social media and “Hamilton.” With four episodes, each one an hour-and-a-half long, fans can watch Rory, Lorelai and Emily experience heartaches, hilarity and hijinks through winter, spring, summer and fall of one calendar year.
On Saturday, The Atlantic will host a book release party for “Gainesville Punk: A History of Bands & Music,” a book by Matt Walker, a Gainesville resident and communications specialist with UF Human Resource Services. The show will feature reunion sets by local punk legends Strikeforce Diablo, I Hate Myself and Army of Ponch. This event will also serve as an LP release show for Deadaires, a band based out of St. Augustine, Florida, with strong ties to Gainesville through its members, who have played in bands like Against Me! and Palatka.
With less than a week off from classes, it may be hard for some students, especially those from outside of Florida, to go home for Fall break. For those staying in town over Thanksgiving, here are some ideas to celebrate Turkey Day!
It’s that time of year again: the time to give thanks for our family and friends. Oftentimes, however, Thanksgiving becomes much more than that — with a heaping pile of drama served alongside the turkey. When it starts getting a bit too much to handle, you may have to turn to an alcoholic beverage or two. Here’s a drinking game to make it all a little more fun:
The Gainesville Vintage Pop Up Market will open this weekend for the second time this year. The market will sell vintage and handmade items, including jewelry, clothes, linens and antique hardware, in support of local artisans.

It’s your senior year of college, and you’re a Florida Gator with a terrible case of football FOMO. With the last home game right around the corner, it’s a wonder how students and fans can think of anything except throwing around an air-filled lump of pigskin. We wait all year for our first home game, and poof: Just like that, it’s over.
Night Bass prodigy AC Slater is set to perform in Gainesville on Wednesday, giving underground electronic fans and mainstream listeners alike a chance to see the producer in an intimate setting.
