Its spring, a season of blooming flowers and beautiful weather. For the University of Florida’s school of music, it is also recital season. Last week and this week, in the University’s music building or MUB, there were several junior and graduate voice recitals featuring classical Italian, German, French, and English repertoire. The four I attended were soprano, Hannah Hough’s graduate recital, and tenor, John Payne, and soprano, Erica Scaglione, and baritone, Timothy Williams’s junior recitals.
Thursday night 9:00 PM, the University of Florida’s Theatre Strike Force hosted an improv show featuring the traveling improv group, Upright Citizens Brigade.
Tuesday, March 17th, the University of Florida’s concert choir, conducted by Dr. Will Kesling, performed in the University Auditorium.
Friday, March 13th, the university’s Florida Players performed their opening night of the show Killer Joe. Nick Chinaris, director of the show, described it in a short interview on the group's Facebook as a “black comedy, so even though there are dark moments, there are still laughs.”
At University Auditorium, the University of Florida’s Wind Symphony put on a performance directed by David A. Waybright and guest conducted by Michael S. Butler.
Last week the University of Florida presented their production of The Phantom of the Opera in the University Auditorium. Making excellent use of the building’s collegiate gothic architecture and elaborate organ, the setting made the audience feel as if they were transported to the time period in which the show takes place.
Thursday night, the High Dive, a bar and venue in downtown Gainesville, hosted live music performed by Turquoise Jeep and Solar Ellipsis.
With the production of the movie Pitch Perfect and the rising fame of The Sing Off-winning group Pentatonix, A’ Capella music is gaining popularity again. The University Auditorium here on Florida’s campus hosted a performance by an all men’s A’ Capella group this past Friday. This group of men are very different than your college, pop-song cover group. The men of Chanticleer are Grammy award winning professionals, who performed a program of songs that provided a truly magical experience for those in attendance.
