OPINION: Novig’s ad is about more than ‘just sports’

Sweeney’s ad in no way showcases what it’s like to be a female athlete, who spends years training, competing and pushing her body to its limit for a chance at victory. But Novig’s ad only represents a hypersexualized actress standing provocatively in a sports-related environment. As much as the ad’s catchphrase says otherwise, sports aren’t the main focus — Sweeney’s body is.

Only some are lucky enough to see Broadway shows in person, and as ticket and travel costs rise, it’s becoming even harder for fans to see their favorite actors on stage. But the recent increase in blockbuster movie musicals is changing the game. Now, people can see these performances without leaving their living room.

Both showcase the hardships of family loss. Both take place in slow-paced, small-town settings. So, what creates the greater draw for “TSITP” over “the Walter Boys?”
