Time to retire the GPD K-9 Unit

OPINION: Other cities and states have indefinitely suspended the use of K-9 programs after similar incidents of police dogs biting suspects who are on the ground. We demand that the City Commission eliminate the canine unit at GPD.

Gainesville Butler Plaza Publix cashier robbed at gunpoint

Hunter Burton, a 23-year-old Gainesville resident, is being charged with robbery with a firearm and grand theft, according to court records. Burton was arrested Sunday at 10:57 p.m. and booked into the Alachua County Jail Monday at 2:46 a.m. He’s being held on a $75,000 bail.

Owls bombard Gators from deep, give Golden first loss

The Gators dropped their first game of the season to FAU 76-74 inside the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. The Owls overcame a 30-point and 12-rebound performance from Florida forward Colin Castleton — his first double-double of the season — by hitting 13 3-pointers on 24 attempts.

How one Nov. 8 referendum changes future Alachua County Commission elections 

Residents of Alachua County voted to enact single-member district voting, meaning County Commissioners will only be voted in by the people they represent. The campaign saw public scrutiny from both sides due to potentially misleading signs and information. The County Commission might challenge it in the future, but for now, the amendment is here to stay.

Alachua County Forever acquires vital portion of land for conservation corridor

Following years of collaboration with McNab and the Carr family, Alachua County Forever purchased this land, which is slated to become part of a wildlife corridor southwest of Micanopy. It will connect Barr Hammock Preserve and Price’s Scrub State Park, a vital development in statewide conservation efforts. The property formerly belonged to Archie and his wife, conservationist Majorie Harris Carr.
