Gainesville continues its celebration of Pride with events, museum exhibits and feelings of community

Pride Month has been a celebration of the queer community since 1970, just one year after LGBTQ+ individuals fought against systemic injustices in the Stonewall Riots. Although the cause is commemorated nationwide in the month of June for over 50 years, Gainesville serves as one city celebrating Pride Month just a bit longer.

Gainesville Sister Cities: Supporting Israeli and Palestinian communities

For the past 26 years, the city of Gainesville has fostered international connections with its local government by partnering with the cities of Kfar Saba, Israel and Qalqilya, Palestine through the Sister City Program of Gainesville, Inc. When Emily Westerholm visited the Alachua County Jail Oct. 1, she said the air felt like Christmas Eve. Inmates were excitedly awaiting the implementation of the county’s ordinance — allowing free and unlimited jail phone calls meant to go into effect that day. The excitement, however, didn't last long.

New state-appointed GRU board sets precedent in U.S. history

In a crowded Gainesville City Hall on Sept. 4, a historical precedent was set as the new governor-appointed Gainesville Regional Utilities Authority board met for the first time. At the meeting, board members established meeting times and location and sought a direction for the future of Gainesville's utilities.

Alachua County immigrants fear new SB 1718’s impact on health care

Senate Bill 1718 took effect July 1 and is among the strictest immigration laws in the country. One of the controversial aspects of the law is the provision requiring any hospital that accepts Medicaid to ask about patients’ immigration status. Local advocacy organizations, health care workers and community members worry about the impacts the law could have on immigrant households across Alachua County.
