John Henry, the creator of “Alachua,” the sculpture in front of Marston Science Library better known by UF students as “The French Fries,” died Nov. 1. He was 79 years old.
Anushka Dakshit is a fourth-year journalism and women’s studies major and the general reporter on the University desk of The Alligator. She started out as an arts and culture reporter at The Avenue and hopes to pursue arts and culture reporting and print magazine journalism in her career. Along with The Alligator, she is one of the Print Editorial Directors of Rowdy Magazine. In her free time, she likes to listen to old Bollywood music, read and obsess over other writers’ processes whenever she has no idea what she’s doing (which is often).
In the next year, the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences plans to build a 19,000-square-foot AI hub at the Gulf Coast Research Center in Tampa. The hub will be used to manufacture AI technology with around a $23 million budget.
The coalition is calling their plan of action “Spook Sasse Out of Our Swamp.” One part of the plan includes attending President Lauren Lemasters’ office hours on Oct. 27 at 8 a.m. The second part of the plan is a protest during the final interview between the Board of Trustees and Sasse from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. outside of Emerson Alumni Hall.
The Ukrainian Student Association brought the local Ukrainian community together Friday through a vigil for peace in the prolonged Russo-Ukrainian War. The vigil was held at the Chapel of Incarnation, located at 1522 W. University Ave.
With a centennial celebration underway, the University Women’s Club has some unconventional plans: the organization will be dissolved after their 100th anniversary.
A handful of Gainesville students came together at the UF Iranian Student Association memorial service outside the Reitz Union in honor of Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman who died after being arrested Sept. 16 in Tehran for allegedly breaking hijab rules.
After more than two months of construction, Marston’s third floor opened Sept. 12, said Patrick Reakes, a senior associate dean of UF Libraries. The fourth and fifth floors of the library remain closed due to continued renovation, Reakes said. They could reopen in almost two months.

The UF presidential search remains a secret as it enters its fourth month. Public record bills passed in March permit the names of Florida schools' presidential candidates to remain private, but similar questions to recent state searches persist.
