Chronic exposure to these chemicals significantly increases the risk of cancer, reproductive issues, and liver damage, among other serious health effects. Military personnel and veterans have historically performed their duties without protection from PFAS exposure, prompting the introduction of the Veterans Exposed to Toxic (VET) PFAS Act in July 2023.
Commissioner elect James Ingle won the 2024 race for Commissioner At-large, Seat A against Fareed Johnson. Ingle ran for City Commission District 2 in 2022, but lost to Ed Book by about 300 votes. Ingle will take current City Commissioner-At large, Reina Sacco’s seat.
Organizations across the county rallied young voters in the college town with incentives and online promotions. On Tuesday, Farah & Farah Personal Injury Lawyers offered free coffee to voters at over 30 coffee shops across Florida and Georgia, including four Gainesville locations.
Voters also had the opportunity to vote on multiple local referendums and six state amendments. Amendments 3 and 4, which would legalize recreational marijuana and limit government interference for abortions, both failed. State amendments need 60% public approval to pass, while local referendums only need a majority to vote in favor.

Democratic incumbent Kim Barton retained her seat as Alachua County Supervisor of Elections in a landslide victory against Republican challenger Judith Jensen Tuesday evening. She won by more than 32,000 votes.
Aside from electing local and national representatives, Alachua County voters also decided on several local ballot referendums and amendments. They’re amendments to city and county rules, known as charters.
With his victory, Brannan will enter his final term as a state representative. He said he will continue to prioritize serving District 10 and bring state dollars into the rural counties in his district.
Republican candidate Stan McClain won the Florida State Senate District 9 seat after earning a majority in Levy County and his home county, Marion.
As an Alachua native and previous Levy County Commissioner of six years, Johnson has ties to all three counties part of District 22 — Alachua, Gilchrist and Levy County.
