The hipster subculture has become especially prevalent in recent years among young people between the ages of 18 and 30. The common idea of a typical hipster is built around the thought that they think they are basically too cool for anything mainstream.

Most college students are always in desperate need to make extra cash over the summer, but the problem with a summer job is that we still want to enjoy our break and have a little fun during our down time. Slaving away rolling burritos for minimum wage hardly describes anyone’s ideal time.

As a college student, it is important to learn how to cut corners and stick to a budget. We sometimes have to clip coupons, take the bus or use generic toilet paper that feels more like parchment paper. These are the sacrifices we make to survive, but just like any person in their youth, we want to have worthwhile experiences and adventures. We want to travel and see the world, but it never seems like we can afford it.

Due to the current competitive job market, many students are told that they must set themselves apart in order to get ahead. We are constantly told to gain as much experience as possible, to tailor our résumés to the position we want and subject ourselves to countless resume writing workshops and critiques.

As a typical social media distracted college student, I often find myself pinning recipes and colorful pictures of fruit salads on Pinterest instead of writing my five-page midterm paper. I recently stumbled upon a recipe for banana bread with three over-ripe bananas resting on my kitchen counter.

The two things that really put me in a bad mood are lack of sleep and hunger. I did not expect to be fully satisfied when looking at the 3-day diet plan, but I did not anticipate how fiercely my body and mood would protest to it.

When I was a textbook pre-teen girl trying to figure out who I was and how I wanted people to see me, I would often aspire to be one of those eccentric, free spirits I saw in films. Those “manic pixie dream girls,” as film critic Nathan Rabin called them, were my idols because I thought that I wanted to stand out and be “different.” I realized later in life that these characters, as inspiring as they may seem, are really put in movies to serve the agenda of the male character.

When most people get to college they get caught up in the multitude of opportunities, academic and romantic alike. Unless a student comes into college already in a committed relationship, most of us just want to explore casual dating or even casual sex.

When I hear that there were open auditions for a local production of the Vagina Monologues, I jumped at the opportunity. I walked into a room with a table laid out with copies of various monologues taken from Eve Ensler’s interviews with more than 200 women. I chose to read "Because He Liked to Look At It" and as I went through my audition, I felt empowered.

When I first walked into the new Trader Joe’s that opened up on Archer Road, the first thing I saw was a giddy toddler scurrying by me, pushing a child-sized red cart.

I wish Tom Cruise would stop starring in action films because his comeback is never going to happen or that Adam Sandler would realize he isn’t funny anymore and quit making really bad comedy movies. Sometimes I want to see an educational documentary before my brain turns to goo because of films like “Rock of Ages” or “That’s My Boy.” There have been countless times when an independent or foreign film has created significant buzz but is not showing at my local commercial theater. Like many film fanatics, I get sick of the constant Hollywood blockbusters getting turned out every month.

The Harn Museum of Art is co-sponsoring a one-night-only screening of director Ben Shapiro’s documentary, "Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters" Tuesday at the Hippodrome Theatre. Carol McCusker, Curator of Photography at the Harn, will lead a talkback with the audience following the film.

Inspirational sayings make popular Facebook statuses. On Tumblr, powerful quotes layered over equally powerful images are constantly reblogged.

After the critical and financial success of “Bridesmaids,” women have finally been recognized as contenders for lead comedic roles. Audiences have expected that more female-dominated comedy films would follow, and one is on it’s way this weekend.

This is yet another summer of superhero films. The predictability of Hollywood would be excruciating if there wasn’t so much to look forward to this summer.

As much as I loathe unnecessary sequels, there are times when I will approve of a classic film being reintroduced at a time when it has almost been forgotten. The "American Pie" franchise has turned out some really offensive and corny teen comedies over the past decade, all of which spat in the face of the original.

There are rare occasions when I watch a movie, it strikes me as completely bizarre, and I still love it. The new Jay and Mark Duplass film, “Jeff, Who Lives at Home” is one of those oddball cinema experiences that win over an audience despite its idiosyncrasies.
