One of the newer trends of the film industry is adapting best-selling novel series into record-breaking movies. The latest series that has been creating buzz all over social media websites and television is “The Hunger Games.” The tremendously popular trilogy written by Suzanne Collins has attracted a widespread following, mostly among young adults.

The movie creating the most box-office buzz this past weekend was the film remake of the 1980s TV crime drama, “21 Jump Street.”

The much-anticipated event has come and gone. Another year of cinematic genius has been judged and praised according to the standards of the Academy.

There are currently two sequels plaguing the box office this weekend. "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" and "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" are a reminder of how the film industry likes to cheapen even its best movies with unnecessary sequels and prequels. It's as if the first "Ghost Rider" and "Journey to the Center of the Earth" were not bad enough. Hollywood loves to dig an even deeper hole for itself with cringe-worthy sequels. I wish someone would make it stop.

With the arrival of Valentine's Day there comes the seasonal flood of quirky chick flicks. This year's much-anticipated love story was the "The Vow," starring the hunky Channing Tatum from "Dear John" and the dazzling Rachel McAdams from "The Notebook." It comes as a surprise that this film was not adapted from a Nicholas Sparks' novel; instead, it was inspired by actual events.

"Chronicle" was a surprisingly fresh science-fiction film that has the ability to impress audiences with its authenticity. There is a superb balance of action, emotion and humor throughout the film that makes watching both exciting and touching. It is the type of film that deserves a roaring applause as the credits roll.

There are many films that fail to leave any sort of impression on an audience but still manage of be entertaining. In the case of "Man on a Ledge," there is enough quality to please the viewer and leave them satisfied. The movie does fall short of its goal to be a thrilling, exciting experience; however, it isn't completely scorn-worthy.

It seems outrageous that Leonardo DiCaprio has not won an Oscar after three nominations. After a practically flawless acting career spanning almost 20 years, DiCaprio deserves the highest recognition there is for any actor. It is obvious that DiCaprio commits himself fully to each role, putting in his blood, sweat and tears to bring each performance together.

The holidays are upon us, which means that the year is coming to a close. With the fast approaching new year comes the start of a multitude of awards shows. Personally, my excitement for awards season culminates at the Academy Awards. Nominations don't come out until January, but the time has come to make my personal predications of what looks like Oscar bait.

This past weekend, thousands of teens stood shivering in the November wind as they anxiously shuffled towards the box office to retrieve tickets to yet another "Twilight" film opening. Some attended to see the book they spent days poring over come to life on screen. Others were simply joining yet another movie-franchise hype. A few were mothers and daughters bonding over a mutual affinity for dazzlingly attractive men and innocent love stories. Then there were the occasional sniggering hecklers ready to mock Kristen Stewart's awkward acting, Robert Pattinson's uncomfortable sneer and Taylor Launter's notorious shirtless scenes.

Will Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar" starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Armie Hammer make the cut for the Oscars?

Some films are so odd that I really never know what to make of them. "An Invisible Sign," a drama film released on DVD/Blu-Ray on Nov. 1, is one such film that allowed eccentricities to prevent it from coming together. The film stars Jessica Alba as Mona Gray, a young woman who attempts to restore her father's health by giving up everything she's ever cared about, except mathematics.

With the rising cost of movie theater tickets, people must be economical in their film selections. There is a profound feeling of satisfaction that comes with walking out of the theater after seeing a great film and knowing with certainty that you haven't wasted your money. Many movies are worth seeing, but not all of these are worth seeing in theaters. "In Time," a science fiction thriller starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried that released Oct. 28, might not be the most frugal film choice for theater viewing.

Forbidden love is a common theme in many dramatic films, but Audience Award winner at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, "Circumstance," explores a fresh take on the impact society can have on true love. An engrossing portrayal of homosexuality in modern Iran, "Circumstance" is a success in almost every way. This film gives an in-depth view of the struggles among Iranian youth and the cultural boundaries that barricade them from their own personal freedoms.

When word let out that a "Footloose" remake was in progress, I was highly skeptical. Since its original 1984 release, "Footloose" has become a classic teen dance film, defining the genre and setting an example for subsequent films, such as "Save the Last Dance" and "Step Up." The idea of modernizing a cornerstone of '80s filmdom made me cringe. Yet, curiosity compelled me to investigate what could have been a defaming of one of my favorite teen movies.

Love and faith are both powerful concepts that fuel human existence. They are what guide people through life and support them in the most challenging of times. Some might argue that love and faith are all anyone needs to achieve any feat, but which idea is stronger? What about the person who has no faith? "The Ledge," a thriller starring Charlie Hunnam ("Sons of Anarchy") and Liv Tyler, explores the battle between faith and love, making audiences question what someone should be willing to risk for either.

Occasionally I like to venture outside of the Hollywood-production bubble and explore what other cultures have to offer in the world of cinema. Foreign films have always been a bit of a risk for me, especially because I'm not always a fan of subtitles, although, my feelings of frustration can be quelled by a truly engrossing story. "Sarah's Key," the film adaptation of Tatiana de Rosnay's novel "Elle s'appeliat Sarah," is a 2010 French drama starring Mèlusine Mayance and "Bitter Moon's" Kristin Scott Thomas. It is an example of a captivating film that should set a standard for all future foreign films.

I find some sort of sick pleasure in seeing movies with the expectation that they will be awful. I love films that are so bad that they cross over into hysterical. When I set out to see the action thriller "Abduction" during the weekend of its Sept. 23 release, I fully expected to be exiting the theater in tears from joyous laughter. My premonition of "Abduction" being a fabulous disaster was completely accurate.

It is a universal habit to arrive at the movie theater early in order to catch the previews. Everyone loves to get hyped up for upcoming films and comment on what they'll be seeing within the next few months.
